Winter Trip to the Wisconsin Dells

February 21, 2019

Spirit’s 5th winter trip to the Wisconsin Dells was a great success! Although the original plan included a trip to Madison, WI with our winter participants, the buses could not operate outside of the Dells due to a snow storm. Luckily, Spirit representatives Erin and Sarah were prepared with a fun Plan B - bowling at Chalet Lanes & Lounge in the Wisconsin Dells! You can read more about this event below.

On February 12, sixteen participants were picked up by taxi and brought to the Chalet Lanes & Lounge. We bowled about two games and ordered pizza for the participants. Our representatives Erin and Sarah enjoyed interacting with the participants who were there. We had some fun conversations with the participants about their positions and their dorm housing. After bowling and lunch, the taxis brought everyone back to their respective housing.

The next day, we picked up a new group of ten participants at their housing and brought them to the bowling alley. We about three games with this group. After bowling, we ordered pizzas and even a round of cheese curds after learning the participants had not yet tasted this infamous dish of Wisconsin! It was really fun talking with the participants on this day as well. We discussed dorm life in the Dells and how this is the first time that the participants have lived with roommates.

Later that evening, we attended the Valentine’s Day Dance organized by the Wisconsin Dells ISOP (International Student Outreach Program). Spirit ran the snack table, which allowed for more time to visit with Spirit participants and many other participants living in the Dells this winter.

Although we were not able to visit Madison for our planned tour of the State Capitol and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it was still a fun cultural experience. On both days, we handed out Spirit Cultural Exchange sunglasses with an American flag pattern, which made for some fun photos! Overall, the participants were appreciative we visited and that we had a fun backup activity for them.
