Q. How much do Spirit’s services cost U.S. Host Companies?
A. Spirit’s services are complimentary to US Host Companies. International program applicants pay a program fee to participate in the program.
Q. Do I need to pay for the participants' travel costs to and from the United States?
A. No, all participants are responsible for their own transportation costs.
Q. What countries do Work and Travel participants come from?
A. Our participants come from approximately 30 countries worldwide. Candidate availability varies by country and program. More information on specific nationalities is available by contacting Spirit.
Q. What if I need help or have any questions during the season?

Work and Travel FAQ
Q. What are the requirements for employers to participate in Spirit’s Work and Travel Program?
A. Employers must:
- Demonstrate a seasonal or temporary need, which requires labor levels above normal worker levels.
- Plan and provide cultural activities on a regular basis for participants throughout their program.
- Provide each participant with an average of 30 hours of work per week.
- Provide or identify employee housing near the participant’s work site.
- Guarantee that positions will enable participants to interact with and work alongside Americans.
- Provide up-to-date business documentation that meets regulatory requirements.
Q. When are Work and Travel participants available?
A. Summer participants arrive between May and July and can work until August or September. Winter participants arrive in December and can work until March. Spring participants generally arrive in March and end in May. Specific program dates vary by country.
Q. What types of positions can Work and Travel participants fill?
A. Our participants may work in a variety of entry-level positions, including: kitchen help, counter staff, wait-staff, housekeeping, retail, ride operators, and many others. Some types of positions are strictly prohibited by federal regulations. Contact Spirit for specific guidance on whether your positions qualify for the program.
Q. How many hours per week can Work and Travel participants work? What if a participant requests overtime?
A. Participants usually work 30 hours per week, on average. The amount of hours worked after that is up to the employer and the participant. Overtime compensation laws vary in each state and these laws apply to our participants. We require participants to limit excessive hours, which may interfere with sufficient participation in cultural activities.
Q. Can a Work and Travel participant work more than one job?
A. Participants are allowed to work more than one job during their program. Any secondary employment must be fully vetted by Spirit before the participant can begin work.

Q. How do I begin to develop a Training or Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP)?
A. T/IPPs must meet specific regulatory requirements and it is critical that each phase of the training or internship build on the previous phases. Contact Spirit for specific guidance.
