What Documents Do I Need to Start a J-1 International Teacher Application?

Your degree certificate proves that you have the necessary academic training to teach in your chosen subject. This is required for the J-1 international Teacher application. 

• Must be a degree in education or in the specific field you plan to teach  

• If your degree is not in English, provide a certified English translation as well as the original degree 

• Your degree must be the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree or higher 

• If you have multiple degrees, provide all of them in your application for Spirit Cultural Exchange to review

Having your degree translated ahead of time can speed up your J-1 visa process and ensure there are no delays during your cultural exchange application. Your translation does not need to be official or certified, and you can translate your degree yourself. 

A foreign credential evaluation is required to confirm that your degree is equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree. This evaluation is a critical step for any BridgeUSA Teacher Program. 

• Evaluations must be conducted by a recognized evaluation service, such as The Evaluation Company or WES 

• Provides US schools with confidence in your educational background and your ability to receive a teaching license in their US state

A letter from your current school confirming your full-time teaching position is also required. This document serves as proof of your teaching experience and professional standing. 

• Should be on official school letterhead  

• Must state your position title, subjects taught, and duration of employment  

• Must be signed by your supervisor and dated within the past month.  

This letter, along with your teaching license and degree, forms the backbone of your J-1 visa application.
