June is in full swing, and by now, many of your Work and Travel participants are getting settled into their new roles and routines. With warmer weather, longer days, and the excitement of summer ramping up, it’s the perfect time to plan some cultural activities for June that help participants explore and connect with American culture, and with each other.

At Spirit Cultural Exchange, we know that June can still be a hectic time for Host Employers. That’s why we’ve created this monthly blog series to support your efforts and make cultural activity planning easy, engaging, and fun for all!

June Activity Ideas to Kick Off Summer Fun

Whether you’re planning something small or going all out, these Work and Travel cultural activities for June are sure to bring your participants together and create lasting memories. And as always, Spirit Cultural Exchange’s Account Advisors are here to help you every step of the way.

1. Celebrate Flag Day (June 14)

  • Host a flag-making craft session where participants can make mini American flags or banners to decorate your workplace.
  • Teach the history of Flag Day and encourage participants to share about national symbols from their home countries.
  • Red, white, and blue dress day – Invite staff and participants to wear patriotic colors and take a group photo!

2. Outdoor Movie Night

  • Set up an outdoor screen or projector in your participant housing area or a local park.
  • Show a classic summer or American film—consider titles like The Sandlot, Back to the Future, or National Treasure.
  • Provide popcorn, candy, and lawn chairs or blankets for a relaxed evening under the stars.

3. Taste of America Potluck

  • Invite participants and American staff to bring a favorite dish to share—homemade or store-bought works!
  • Highlight regional summer foods like BBQ ribs, mac & cheese, fresh corn on the cob, or fruit pies.
  • Set up a “story behind the dish” table where everyone can share what their dish means to them.

4. Summer Sports & Recreation Day

  • Organize a friendly tournament featuring games like volleyball, soccer, or relay races.
  • Partner with your local recreation center or sports league for an afternoon of active fun.
  • Encourage participants to teach a sport or game from their home country as a cultural exchange!

5. Local Festival or Concert Outing

  • June is peak season for music festivals, art fairs, and local celebrations.
  • Check your city’s calendar and plan a group trip to a weekend festival or outdoor concert.
  • Encourage participants to take photos and submit them to Spirit Cultural Exchange to be featured in our cultural highlights!

6. Visit a Local Attraction

  • Museums, botanical gardens, nature trails, or historical sites can make for a meaningful and educational day trip.
  • Make the outing interactive with a fun quiz or photo scavenger hunt.
  • Provide background info ahead of time so participants know what to look for or expect.
