During our winter trip to Wisconsin, our staff had the opportunity to learn more about the J-1 Work and Travel Host Employer experience in Wisconsin with a visit a local Host Employer tucked into the picturesque, snowy mountains. Surrounded by winter scenery and snow-covered hills, the setting alone was memorable, but it was the people and the sense of community that truly stood out.
The Host Employer recently opened a new building that houses both their store and café area, creating a welcoming space for employees and visitors alike. The location also embraces winter sports, with a snow hill that adds to the unique experience of working and living in the area. It was clear that the Host Employer had put a lot of thought into creating not just a workplace, but a place where people could gather, connect, and feel at home.
During the visit, we met participants from Brazil and Argentina, and their sense of family was immediately apparent. They spoke highly of one another and shared how grateful they were for a Host Employer who genuinely cares about their well-being. From teaching them English to organizing weekly trips to the store, the Host Employer goes above and beyond to support them both personally and professionally.
What was especially heartwarming to hear was how much these participants have embraced life in Wisconsin. They’ve formed strong friendships with their fellow American co-workers, taken trips together, including a memorable visit to Chicago, and truly enjoy the relationships they’ve built with one another. The bond they share is rooted in mutual support, shared experiences, and a genuine appreciation for the opportunity they’ve been given.
This site visit was a powerful reminder that successful workplaces are built on more than just jobs. They’re built on trust, care, and community.
