Spirit Cultural Exchange’s Vice President of International Business recently had an interview with, Tommaso C., a Trainee Program participant who is currently training at his Italian American Chamber of Commerce internship in Chicago. He shared with us his BridgeUSA exchange experience in the US so far, as well as what it’s like to live and work in Chicago as a trainee.
Ever wondered what is it like to train at a Chamber of Commerce? Check out this interview we conducted with one of our international J-1 Trainee participants!
Tell us about your background and how you ended up in Chicago.
I grew up in Perugia and attended school there. During my studies, I participated in Erasmus programs in the Netherlands and the Canary Islands, focusing on marketing and law as part of a double degree in business administration and law. After graduating in February, I decided to pursue an internship in the US. I found an opportunity with the Italian American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago and decided to apply. Now, here I am!
What kind of projects are you working on at the Italian American Chamber of Commerce?
At the moment, I am working on a project to make part of an industry event open to the general public. This is my first real working experience in an office, so I am still adjusting to this new environment and learning a lot. In my hometown, I have experience organizing events, including night dancing events and wine-related events like Umbria Wine.
What has been the biggest surprise for you since arriving in the US?
The biggest surprise has been how different people are here compared to my hometown. In Perugia, everyone is very social and interested in each other’s lives. Here, people are more focused on their own business and always seem to be in a rush. It has been an interesting adjustment, but I am enjoying the experience.
Have you found any good Italian food in Chicago?
Yes, I have found some good Italian products at Mariano’s supermarket, although they are a bit expensive compared to what I am used to. I enjoy cooking at home, so I still get to eat good food. I also go running along the lakefront, which is amazing.
Thank you to Tommaso for sharing his experience with us!
