Last week, Spirit Cultural Exchange welcomed fourteen Summer Work Travel participants representing seven countries on a day of exploration in Madison, Wisconsin. Designed as a cultural activity, the excursion gave participants the opportunity to learn more about the history and government of the state where they are spending their summer, experience life on an American university campus, build friendships with fellow participants, and discover more of the United States beyond their Host Employers.
The day began as Spirit Cultural Exchange representatives Michelle and Anna Marie picked up participants from international residence housing in Wisconsin Dells before traveling together by bus to Madison. Participants, who are working for multiple Host Employers throughout the Dells area, enjoyed spending time together as they headed to Wisconsin’s capital city.
The group’s first stop was the Wisconsin State Capitol, where participants toured one of the state’s most iconic landmarks. As they explored the beautiful Capitol building, they learned about Wisconsin’s history, government, and legislative process while gaining a greater appreciation for the role state government plays in the daily lives of its residents. For many participants, visiting the Capitol offered a firsthand look at an important American civic institution unlike those in their home countries.
Following the tour, participants had the unique opportunity to meet with Jean Brody, a congressional staffer from Senator Tammy Baldwin‘s office. Jean shared insights into her work in public service while also speaking about her personal journey of immigrating to the United States as a child. Her story provided a meaningful perspective on civic engagement, opportunity, and building a life in a new country. Participants were eager to ask questions about her career, her experiences, and the work of a congressional office, creating an engaging conversation that complemented everything they had learned during their Capitol visit.
The group then traveled to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where participants experienced one of the nation’s leading public universities. Walking through campus gave them a glimpse into student life in the United States and the vibrant atmosphere that makes UW–Madison a destination for students from around the world.
Participants also had free time to enjoy some of the university’s most popular gathering places. Many explored Memorial Union, relaxed along the shores of Lake Mendota, and enjoyed lunch while taking in the beautiful summer weather. A particularly memorable moment came when several participants joined American university students inside the Union to watch a FIFA Club World Cup match on the big screen. Sharing the excitement of an international sporting event with local students created a fun and authentic cultural exchange experience, demonstrating how common interests can bring people from different backgrounds together.
By the end of the day, participants returned to Wisconsin Dells with new friendships, lasting memories, and a deeper understanding of Wisconsin’s history, government, and higher education system. Experiences like this are an important part of the Summer Work Travel Program, encouraging participants to engage with their local communities, learn about American culture, and explore the United States beyond the workplace.
