What does a summer in the United States look like through the eyes of an international exchange participant? For Melissa from Colombia, it means new experiences, cross-cultural friendships, and plenty of memories to take home!
Melissa is Spirit Cultural Exchange’s Video Challenge Grand Prize Winner! Her winning video offers a glimpse into her life as a Work and Travel participant, from folding and handing out towels to guests to spending time with her international coworkers. Her video reminds us that cultural exchange isn’t just about big adventures. It’s also about the everyday moments that make an experience unforgettable.
Growing Through New Experiences
When asked what she enjoyed most about her summer, Melissa reflected on how much she learned by stepping outside her comfort zone.
“I think what I enjoyed the most was being able to experience something completely different from what I was used to. Being away from my family, working in another country, and communicating in English every day helped me grow a lot as a person.”
She also enjoyed discovering Wisconsin’s landscapes and peaceful surroundings. But above all, it was the people she met and the experiences they shared that made her summer special.
One moment she will never forget was arriving in the United States for the first time.
“I think I will never forget the moment I arrived in the United States and thought, ‘Wow, I’m really here.'”
That moment brought excitement, nervousness, and a little fear as she prepared to spend several months away from her family. As she settled into her new environment, however, she began creating memories that will stay with her long after returning home.
“I will also always remember the moments after work, laughing with my coworkers, having conversations, and all those little things that seemed normal at the time but that I know I will miss so much.”
Melissa’s Advice for Future Participants
What would Melissa tell someone considering a J-1 visa program? Her advice is to embrace the opportunity and approach the experience with an open mind.
“Don’t be afraid of being away from home, speaking English even if you make mistakes, or facing new situations. Not every day is going to be easy, but even the difficult days teach you something.”
She also encourages future participants to make time for everything their exchange experience has to offer, not just work.
“Meet people, travel, practice your English, experience different cultures, and enjoy every moment because when you come back home, you’ll realize how quickly everything went by.”
It is a wonderful reminder that the most rewarding parts of an exchange often happen when we try something new, connect with others, and make the most of the time we have.
