National Community Support Group Summit in Tennessee

Spirit Cultural Exchange staff member Julie recently attended the National Community Support Group Summit in Tennessee, an inspiring gathering focused on strengthening the systems that support international Exchange Visitors. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including Host Employers, sponsors, housing providers, local faith organizations, and community members, all united by a shared goal: creating a more supportive and enriching experience for participants in the Work and Travel program.

The summit took place in Pigeon Forge/Sevierville, Tennessee where local leadership emphasized the program’s importance. The mayor of Pigeon Forge delivered the opening remarks highlighting both strong community support and the vital role Exchange Visitors play in the local economy and cultural landscape.

Additional insights came from representatives of the US Department of State and Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, who underscored the nationwide significance of the Work and Travel program. Their message reinforced how these cultural exchanges foster diplomacy, mutual cultural understanding, support local businesses, and create lasting global connections.

Beyond discussions and presentations, the National Community Support Group Summit in Tennessee also included a meaningful service opportunity. Attendees partnered with Keep Sevier Beautiful to volunteer alongside Exchange Visitors to help clean up litter and contribute to protecting and enhancing Sevierville’s environmental efforts. This hands-on activity exemplified the spirit of collaboration and community engagement at the heart of the program.

During the visit, Julie also connected with many Spring participants and Host Employers in the area. Participants shared their positive program experiences including tasting new food, hiking in the beautiful Smoky Mountains, practicing their English and learning new job skills. Overall, the National Community Support Group Summit in Tennessee highlighted the power of collaboration in building welcoming, supportive environments for Exchange Visitors, while also enriching the communities that host them.
