Cultural Exchange in Ohio

This month, Spirit team member Julie hit the road to visit some of our incredible BridgeUSA Summer Work and Travel participants in the sunny state of Ohio! From the scenic shores of Lake Erie to the friendly neighborhoods of Port Clinton and Sandusky, this visit was a celebration of cultural exchange in Ohio, new friendships, and the exciting adventures that make the Summer Work and Travel experience unforgettable.

Julie visited participants at work and at several housing locations and was warmly welcomed by students from around the world including Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Colombia, China, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Thailand. It was inspiring to see how participants have not only formed strong bonds with their American co-workers, but also built meaningful friendships with one another. Over an ice cream social, participants shared how they’ve been exchanging traditions—cooking meals for one another, introducing each other to favorite music, and sharing stories of what summer feels like in their home country.

The visit also gave Julie a chance to share a few local tips about the Port Clinton, Sandusky, and Lake Erie Islands area, known for its fun and casual summer and endless things to see and do. Nearby Put-In-Bay and Middle Bass Island are accessible by ferry and packed with activities—from boating and biking to exploring Perry’s Cave, visiting a butterfly house, touring the South Bass Island Lighthouse, and tasting local wines. Cedar Point, the iconic amusement park in Sandusky, was at the top of the cultural activities list for many participants (although some who are not fans of roller coasters, will understandably pass on the opportunity!)

Julie also learned about a local seasonal celebrity: the mayfly! These harmless insects appear each summer and, while they may not be the most popular visitor, their presence is actually a good sign—indicating the health of Lake Erie’s aquatic ecosystem. Though they can be a bit of a nuisance, mayflies don’t bite or sting and serve as a valuable food source for fish and reptiles.

Julie’s visit was a powerful reminder of what the Summer Work and Travel program is all about—cultural exchange, shared experiences, and growing together through travel, work, and community.
