For mechanical engineer Carlos, his J-1 engineering internship in the US with Spirit Cultural Exchange became about much more than developing his engineering skills. It was an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, build confidence, experience a new culture, and discover new ways of approaching his career.
Although Carlos arrived with an engineering background, some of his most valuable takeaways extended beyond his technical field.
As he put it: “It’s not only engineering.”
That is one of the benefits of a J-1 engineering internship in the US: participants can develop professional skills while gaining firsthand experience with American business culture and everyday life in the United States.

Building Professional Skills Through Hands-On Training
During his J-1 engineering internship in the US, Carlos gained practical exposure to manufacturing processes, supply chains, design decisions, materials, cost considerations, and large-scale production. He had the opportunity to build on his education and see how experienced professionals approach real-world challenges.
“I was able to see it, apply it, change it,” Carlos shared, reflecting on the opportunity to put his knowledge into practice.
His training also introduced him to areas beyond traditional engineering, including strategic planning, marketing, customer relationships, and business operations. Training alongside experienced professionals helped him understand how different departments contribute to an organization’s success.
This broader perspective allowed Carlos to strengthen not only his technical knowledge but also his business acumen and problem-solving abilities.

Learning Through Cross-Cultural Collaboration
Cultural exchange was an important part of Carlos’ professional experience, too.
During one project, he collaborated with colleagues from the United States, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Training with people from different backgrounds and perspectives taught him to adapt, communicate effectively, and bring a multicultural team together.
He also became more confident working directly with clients, answering questions, discussing their needs, and exploring potential solutions.
These experiences helped Carlos develop communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills that will serve him throughout his career, regardless of where his professional journey takes him.
Experiencing American Culture Beyond the Office
A J-1 engineering internship in the US isn’t limited to the office!
During his time in the United States, Carlos traveled to new places, tried different restaurants, attended baseball games and other events, made new friends, and even went snowboarding during a Midwestern winter.
Living in the United States gave him something a short vacation couldn’t: the opportunity to experience American culture as part of everyday life.
His advice to future participants? Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and ask questions.
An extended international experience can feel like a big leap, but it’s also an opportunity to meet new people, explore a different country, experience another business culture, and discover what you are capable of.
A Rewarding Experience for His Host Organization
Carlos wasn’t the only one who benefited from the experience. His Host Organization also saw the value of welcoming an international trainee and providing opportunities for professional growth.
In fact, Carlos was the company’s first J-1 Trainee participant. His Host Organization shared the following reflection:
“Carlos was the first J-1 trainee our company hosted, and it was a pleasure having him on our team. With Spirit’s support, he integrated smoothly into our workplace and quickly took on new responsibilities—from participating in customer meetings and evaluating materials to supporting business operations and eventually leading a project to improve our shop workflow.
The experience benefited our team as well. Mentoring Carlos gave our managers an opportunity to strengthen their own teaching and leadership skills. As Carlos progressed, he gained exposure to increasingly advanced areas, including business negotiations and strategy. Carlos became a valued member of our team, and we look forward to staying connected as friends and colleagues after his return home.”
This is a great example of how international training can benefit both participants and Host Companies. Through mentorship, collaboration, and cultural exchange, everyone has an opportunity to learn something new.
