One of the best parts of cultural exchange is the opportunity to meet people from around the world, share experiences, and discover something new. Recently, Spirit Cultural Exchange brought together a group of international teachers in the greater Austin, Texas area for a J-1 Teacher Program meetup with good food, conversation, and new friendships!
Teachers from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Nigeria, and the Philippines joined us for the gathering. All are currently teaching at public schools throughout the Austin area, with experience in subjects ranging from elementary education to dual language programs.
Although they come from different countries and school districts, they share something special: the experience of living and teaching in the United States through the BridgeUSA J-1 Teacher Program.
And, as we quickly discovered, everyone had plenty of stories to share!
Sharing Food, Stories, and New Experiences
Food was a popular topic of conversation at the J-1 Teacher Program meetup, especially as some of our teachers tried mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, and egg rolls for the very first time!
This sparked plenty of discussion about American foods they have discovered since arriving in the United States. While some have found new favorites, others shared a few foods they haven’t enjoyed quite as much. Bacon, macaroni and cheese, and spicy dishes all received mixed reviews!

These everyday discoveries are part of what makes cultural exchange so memorable. Whether it’s finding a new favorite meal or discovering that a popular American dish isn’t quite your taste, trying something unfamiliar is always an opportunity to learn.
Teachers also shared their travel plans and talked about the places they would like to visit during their time in the United States. Chicago and New York City were among the destinations on everyone’s wish lists!
Of course, there was time for some friendly competition, too. Participants enjoyed playing yard games, relaxing, and getting to know one another outside their usual school routines.
Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
One of the highlights of the J-1 Teacher Program meetup was watching teachers from different countries and school districts connect over their shared experiences.
Some participants are relatively new to the United States, while others have spent several years in the program. This created opportunities to exchange advice, discuss adjusting to life in a new country, and reflect on how their experiences have changed over time.
For international educators who may be the only teacher from their home country at their school, connecting with others who understand the experience can be especially meaningful.

Conversations covered everything from classroom experiences and American culture to travel plans and everyday life in the United States. Despite their different backgrounds, everyone found plenty of common ground.
How Spirit Cultural Exchange Supports International Teachers
The J-1 Teacher Program meetup also gave participants an opportunity to spend time with Spirit Cultural Exchange staff, ask questions, and get updates about their programs.
We discussed topics ranging from program renewals and extensions to navigating the Social Security number application process. These conversations offered a chance to provide guidance, address questions, and hear firsthand how teachers are adjusting to life and work in the United States.
At Spirit Cultural Exchange, supporting participants means more than helping them complete their program requirements. We value opportunities to connect in person, build relationships, and make sure our international teachers feel supported throughout their cultural exchange experiences.
Celebrating Cultural Exchange Beyond the Classroom
International teachers bring valuable knowledge, experience, and global perspectives to their American classrooms. But their cultural exchange experiences extend far beyond the school day.
They are exploring new communities, discovering American traditions, building friendships, and sharing their own cultures along the way.
That is what makes the BridgeUSA J-1 Teacher Program so meaningful. Cultural exchange isn’t just about what international teachers share with their students. It’s also about everything they experience, learn, and bring home with them.
We had a wonderful time catching up with our teachers in Austin at the J-1 Teacher Program meetup! From first-time food discoveries to travel plans and friendly yard games, the afternoon was a reminder that some of the best cultural exchange moments happen through simple conversations and shared experiences.
A big thank you to all the international teachers who joined us. We loved spending time with you and look forward to our next opportunity to bring everyone together!
