The health, safety, and welfare of our J-1 participants are Spirit Cultural Exchange’s top priorities. As part of our commitment to your overall well-being, we want to highlight the importance of mental health care in the US and share some of the support resources available to you.
Participating in a cultural exchange program is a brave and transformative experience. It brings opportunities to grow as a professional, connect with new people, and explore a different culture. It also involves big transitions with new environments, new routines, and sometimes unexpected emotions.
Living in a new country is exciting, but adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, responsibilities, and expectations can also be challenging. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, homesick, or emotionally drained, especially when you are far from your family, friends, and support system.
Many J-1 participants experience moments of stress, sadness, loneliness, or anxiety, particularly at the beginning of their cultural exchange program. These feelings do not mean you are failing or doing something wrong. They are common and valid reactions to a major life change.
Being aware of your emotional state, and knowing that it is okay to struggle sometimes, is an important part of self-care. There is no shame in asking for support. You do not have to manage everything by yourself. Spirit Cultural Exchange staff are always available to talk with you, check in, and help connect you with support resources. Whether you are having a hard day or going through a difficult stretch, reaching out is a responsible step.
Accessible Mental Health Care in the US
One important resource available to all J-1 participants on Spirit Cultural Exchange’s insurance plan is DialCare. DialCare is a confidential virtual and telephonic counseling service that gives you access to licensed mental health professionals at no additional cost. It is a safe, secure, and convenient way to get support in a way that fits your schedule and your comfort level. DialCare’s mental health professionals are trained to aid in depression, stress, eating disorders, addiction, relationship problems, anxiety, grief, and more. Spirit Cultural Exchange’s J-1 participants can schedule an appointment with a counselor from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM seven days a week.

How to Use DialCare
Whether you are experiencing a specific challenge or just want someone to talk to, DialCare is here to help. Appointments can typically be scheduled quickly and are available by phone or video. Instructions for accessing DialCare are available on the Spirit Cultural Exchange Support Center.
