One of the most rewarding parts of participating in Spirit Cultural Exchange‘s J-1 Teacher Program is the opportunity to experience American culture beyond the classroom. This summer, a group of Spirit Cultural Exchange Teachers had a Chicago Stars experience, where they enjoyed pre-game tailgating, connected with fellow educators, and even stepped onto the field to help showcase international flags representing the players’ home countries. It was a memorable day filled with cultural exchange, community, and excitement. In the guest blog post below, Katherine from Peru shares her firsthand experience and reflects on what made this special event so meaningful.
My Experience at the Chicago Stars Soccer Game
Last weekend, my family and I had the opportunity to attend the Chicago Stars soccer game, and it was an unforgettable experience from beginning to end.
The day started with tailgating before the game. The atmosphere was friendly, lively, and full of excitement. Everyone was welcoming, and there was a strong sense of community among the participants. My family and I enjoyed sharing snacks, taking photographs, and enjoying the festive environment while meeting new people. It was a wonderful way to begin the day and feel part of the Spirit Cultural Exchange program community. Being surrounded by people who shared the excitement of the event made the experience even more special.

One of the highlights of the day was the pre-game field experience. Before going onto the field, we met with other international Teachers who would be carrying the flags. While we waited for instructions, we introduced ourselves, shared teaching experiences, exchanged advice, and even exchanged phone numbers. It was great to connect with educators from different countries and learn more about their cultural exchange journeys. These conversations allowed us to build new friendships and appreciate the diversity represented within the program.
When it was time to enter the field, I felt incredibly excited. We had the honor of carrying the international flags as the players entered the stadium. This was my favorite part of the day. What made it even more special was that my husband and my young daughter also had the opportunity to carry flags. We also had the chance to meet the team owner, Laura Ricketts. Sharing this unique experience with my family made the moment truly unforgettable. Standing on the field and seeing the crowd from that perspective was amazing.
Another fun moment was interacting with the team mascot. I enjoyed dancing with the mascot, and I was excited to see myself on the stadium screens and on television.

The game itself was dynamic and entertaining. The players showed great skill and determination, and the fans created an incredible atmosphere with their enthusiasm and support. The most exciting part was that the winner was decided in the final minute of the match, keeping everyone engaged until the very end. Overall, the day was filled with fun, cultural exchange, new friendships, and lasting memories. I am grateful for the opportunity to share this special experience with my family and fellow international Teachers.
