Ice Skating Safety Tips

  • General

Ice skating is a popular wintertime activity in the United States. It’s a great way to try something new, spend time with friends, and get outside during the colder winter months. Skating can be a lot of fun, but it can also take time to get comfortable. Here are a few tips for ice skating safely!

Tie your skates tightly

Ice skates shouldn’t feel like sneakers or regular shoes! Make sure your skates are tied tightly enough that your foot isn’t moving around inside the skate. Your ankles should be supported by the skate and shouldn’t be able to move back and forth too much. If you feel like the skates aren’t supporting your ankle, it’s okay to ask the skate rental for a different pair of skates.

Blades are sharp

Be careful of your blades! They have to be sharp to help you stand up on the ice, but you don’t want to cut yourself. Keep your fingers away from the blades.

Dress for the weather

If you’re skating outdoors, make sure to dress warmly! Make sure your legs are covered and you have a warm coat. Gloves are essential – they won’t just keep you warm, they’ll help protect your hands when you get up after a fall.

Take it slow

Moving around on ice may look easy, but ice is slippery! Start off by marching to get a feel for the ice. It’s okay to stay by the boards until you feel more confident. To help keep your balance, try to stand up tall and keep your feet close together.

It’s okay to fall

Everyone falls on the ice – even Olympians! If you feel like you’re losing your balance, bend your knees so you can fall safely. Try not to grab on to anyone else; you don’t want to pull someone else down! Take your time standing back up, and take a break to catch your breath if you need it.

If you follow these tips, we bet you’ll be gliding around the ice in no time!

Happy skating!
